A Tribute to Julius Baker (1915-2003)
by Laurel Ann Maurer
On August 6, 2003, the great American flutist, Julius Baker died. As more than 3,000 flutists gathered at the 31st annual National Flute Association convention in Las Vegas, myself included, the news spread quickly. Our world will never be the same. Yet, it is so much richer for his presence. I feel even more intensely the great privilege that I enjoyed by working with him.
On a large scale, more than almost any other musician of any instrument, Julius Baker impacted the entire flute community for over half a century with his magical and captivating sound, his super-solid technique, his ability to truly project emotion and his wealth of musical knowledge.
Personally, I am grateful to a man who gave me the tools that I needed to pursue the path that I dreamed of. He continues to inspire me on a daily basis.
Thank you, Julie!
